So fam, I waited an entire year to write this blog post because I wanted to thoroughly test the Oura Ring before I recommended it. At first it felt much like every tracker on the market but within a month I got fairly addicted to the sleep analytics. The Oura Ring sent me down a quest for sleep nirvana like I’ve never experienced before. When I first started using the Oura Ring, my analytics were showing while I was “in bed” for 8 hours a night, I was only getting 6.5 hours of actual sleep. Even worse, 30 minutes or so were REM sleep and another 45 mins was deep delta sleep (repairative sleep). So I was getting about an hour of useful sleep every night!!! NO WONDER I FELT TIRED ALL THE TIME. I took small actions to fix and address the lack of quality sleep immediately.

I started with sleep vitamins and progressed to blue blocking glasses. I saw my deep sleep rise to a full hour every night and I was starting to feel amazing during the day. Next I started taking CBD oil from Calm Wellness and I noticed my deep sleep rise to 1.5 hours a night! Everything was falling into line and all I wanted was more.

Then came the Pod from Eight Sleep and OMG I was in deep sleep NIRVANA! With built-in heating and cooling and smartphone controlled thermostats - my sleep went to another level. My Oura Ring started registering 2 - 3 hours a night of deep sleep and 1.5 hours of REM. I mean absolutely stupid numbers! For the first time in my life I was absolutely crushing my alarm clock - I’m talking waking up bouncing off the walls an hour before I set the alarm to go off. The Pod from Eight Sleep is absolutely bonkers and seemed to be the final piece to the puzzle.

However, I’m greedy and definitely want to see how much more I can push these numbers. I’ve recently started using red light therapy from Joovv at night to help regulate my central nervous system into more of a parasympathetic state. Further, the Oura Ring introduced a new feature recently called Moments which has guided meditation and breathing exercises. I’ve found these super relaxing and helpful to do post gym workouts and right before I go to sleep. The Moments utilize Oak - Mediation and Breathing app for some of the guided breathing exercises. I started using Oak to run 8-10 hours of soothing sounds while I sleep at night. The Oura Ring does provide heart rate variability (HRV) and Heart Rate during guided meditation moments which I have found super helpful to see where I’m at currently with my rest.

Now there is still so much more to the Oura Ring! Not only does it track your sleep cycles, it also tracks your resting heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), body temperature, and respiratory rate. It takes that information and gives you scores of Readiness. I’ve found these super helpful in determining how hard I can push my body in the gym for workouts. If my HRV falls or my resting heart rate didn’t bottom out during the night, it’s a good sign that I am not fully recovered from my previous workouts and need to take it easy.
